Tuscany has two international airports, the Galileo Galilei International Airport in Pisa and Amerigo Vespucci Airport in Florence.
Galileo Galilei International Airport – Pisa
Located only 30 kms apart, the Pisa airport is the larger of the two and is one of the important European low-cost hub, very well connected with all the main European destinations.
Amerigo Vespucci Airport – Florence
Florence airport, 70 kms far from Lucca, is very well connected with all the European hubs of the main Air Alliances, with daily direct flights from the main European destinations. Florence airport is easy to reach from all over the World with 1 stop.
Train is the simplest and easiest way to get to Lucca. The Lucca train station is easily reached from the old center of the city with less than a five-minute walk.
The closest airport is Pisa Airport. There’s a new shuttle train PISA MOVER heading to the central station (5 minute ride); once there, you need to change trains for Lucca that takes about 30 minutes. There are trains every hour. Tickets can be bought on line here; the train ticket costs 3.60€.
From Florence airport, instead, you need to reach the train station in Florence center (Santa Maria Novella) and then take a train heading to Lucca, there are trains leaving every hour. The average journey time between Florence and Lucca is 1 hour and 20 minutes. On an average weekday, there are 43 trains per day travelling from Florence to Lucca. Tickets can be bought on line here; the average train ticket costs 8€.
Lucca is located on the highway A11 Firenze – Mare, which connects Florence with Pisa. Lucca highway exit is located about 1 km from the city center and is less than 50 minute drive from Florence, and 25 minute drive from Pisa.
The old center of the city is closed off to traffic. So, once there, the car must be parked. Lucca has several parking areas both outside and inside the city walls. Most of them are paid park lots, but outside the old city center you may also find some free ones.
You can catch a taxi from just outside the Florence and Pisa airports for an approximate cost of 100€ and 50€, respectively.
Lucca is very famous for being a bike-friendly place: there are many bike-reserved areas all over the city! Consequently, there are plenty of rental bikes or tandem bikes shops both outside and inside the city walls, that offer cheap hourly and daily prices.
A bike is an excellent way to explore the walls that entirely surround the city.
